A quick bit of Stone Oak history
Stone Oak started as ranchland. In 1985 a group of developers led by Dan Parman drew up a master plan that mapped out where homes, schools, churches and hospitals would go before the first house was built, making it the first master-planned community in Bexar County. The Sonterra neighborhoods around the country club were among the first to go up.
That plan still shapes daily life here. It sets limits on things like sign size and building height, which is a big reason Stone Oak still looks tidy and green instead of like one long strip mall.
What are Stone Oak homes like?
Variety is the word. With roughly 35 subdivisions, you can find established homes from the earlier phases, newer family two-stories, gated communities and luxury estates with Hill Country views. That range is exactly why Stone Oak works so well for move-up buyers: you can sell a smaller Stone Oak home and buy a bigger one without changing schools, churches or your favorite taco spot.
Stone Oak schools
Stone Oak is served by North East ISD. High schools include Ronald Reagan High School, which opened in 1999 on Ronald Reagan Dr, and Lady Bird Johnson High School, which opened in 2008 on Bulverde Rd at TPC Pkwy. Elementary and middle school assignments depend on the specific street, so I confirm zoning with NEISD for every home we look at.
Parks, trails and things to do
- Stone Oak Park (20395 Stone Oak Pkwy) has paved and unpaved bike trails, a walking trail, fitness stations, a playground and a pavilion.
- Classen-Steubing Ranch Park (20202 Hardy Oak Blvd) opened in 2023 with trails, pavilions and five ball fields, next to a large stretch of land the city is keeping undeveloped.
- Shopping, restaurants and medical offices line Stone Oak Pkwy, US-281 and Loop 1604, and Methodist Hospital Stone Oak is right in the neighborhood.
HOAs in Stone Oak
The Stone Oak Property Owners Association covers roughly 6,500 property owners and dozens of individual neighborhood associations. That means most homes have two layers: the master association and a neighborhood HOA. Dues and rules vary by subdivision, and gated communities typically cost more. I pull the details for each home so the total monthly cost is clear from the start.
